At Bourk’s Complete Car Care in Ottawa, ON, we’ve embraced the latest in automotive technology, especially when it comes to computer onboard diagnostics. These systems are not just a fancy addition but a crucial part of modern automotive care.
Onboard Diagnostics (OBD) systems are an essential component in vehicles, especially those manufactured in the model year 1996 and onwards in the United States. These systems are the vehicle’s internal computer system that monitors performance, particularly focusing on emissions control. Developed with guidelines from the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and the California Air Resources Board, OBD systems ensure vehicles meet emissions standards while providing critical diagnostic information.
OBD plays a vital role in vehicle health monitoring. It tracks various vehicle data, including engine temperature, fuel system status, and more. When something goes amiss, such as a malfunction in the emissions control system, the OBD alerts the driver through the malfunction indicator light (commonly known as the check engine light). This prompt notification allows for early detection and rectification of issues, potentially avoiding more significant problems down the line.
Imagine your car as a high-tech gadget with its own built-in health check system. That’s essentially what Onboard Diagnostics (OBD) systems are. Nestled within your vehicle is a smart on-board computer, constantly chatting with a network of sensors spread throughout your car. These sensors are the car’s lookouts; they keep an eye on everything from how well the engine is running to whether the fuel system is in top shape, even down to the nitty-gritty of exhaust emissions.
It’s like having a 24/7 diagnostician under the hood, making sure every journey is smooth and trouble-free. But what happens when something goes wrong? That’s where the OBD system really steps up. If it finds a problem it can’t fix on the fly, it stores a special code – a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) – and lights up the check engine light on your dashboard. This little light is your heads-up that your car needs some attention. To find out exactly what’s up, mechanics hook up a scan tool to your car’s OBD port, usually tucked away under the dashboard.
This tool is like a translator; it reads those DTCs and tells us, in mechanic-speak, what your car is fretting about. These codes, which are pretty much the same across most car brands thanks to guidelines by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), help us zero in on the issue quickly. So, whether it’s a small hiccup or something bigger, we can get you back on the road safely and efficiently.
Onboard Diagnostics (OBD) systems empower us at Bourk’s Complete Car Care to offer a variety of specialized services:
Engine Performance Analysis: OBD allows us to quickly assess the engine’s health, identifying issues like misfires or inefficient fuel consumption, ensuring your engine runs smoothly.
Emissions Control Diagnostics: We use OBD to pinpoint problems in the emissions system, vital for meeting emissions standards and ensuring your vehicle remains environmentally friendly.
Identifying Electrical Problems: Electrical issues can be complex; OBD helps us decode electrical malfunctions, from battery problems to alternator issues, ensuring your car’s electrical system functions properly.
Fuel System Checks: The OBD system allows us to efficiently diagnose fuel system problems, including issues with fuel injectors or the fuel pump, ensuring optimal fuel efficiency and performance.
Transmission Health Monitoring: By reading OBD data, we can detect early signs of transmission issues, preventing costly repairs and maintaining the smooth operation of your vehicle.
Catalytic Converter Efficiency: OBD helps us evaluate the efficiency of your catalytic converter, which is crucial for reducing exhaust emissions and maintaining your car’s environmental compliance.
These services are enabled by the advanced diagnostic capabilities of OBD. They help ensure that your vehicle at Bourk’s Complete Car Care receives the most precise and effective care possible. Let us keep your vehicle in top condition for the roads of Ottawa.
Onboard Diagnostics (OBD) systems are not just for diagnosing problems; they play a crucial role in preventative maintenance at Bourk’s Complete Car Care:
Early Detection of Engine Issues: OBD allows us to catch engine problems before they escalate. We can detect misfires or irregularities in engine performance, helping to prevent more serious damage.
Monitoring Emission Control Systems: Regular OBD checks ensure that the emission control systems are functioning correctly. This keeps your vehicle compliant with environmental regulations and running efficiently.
Battery Health Checks: Using OBD, we can monitor the health of your car’s battery. This helps in identifying potential issues before you find yourself stranded with a car that won’t start.
Cooling System Monitoring: OBD helps us keep tabs on the cooling system. We will ensure it’s working as it should to prevent overheating and engine damage.
Transmission Performance Tracking: Regular OBD diagnostics can reveal early signs of wear or issues in the transmission system. This allows for timely interventions that can save costly future repairs.
Fuel System Maintenance: OBD enables us to ensure the fuel system, including injectors and the fuel pump, is operating efficiently. This can help improve fuel economy and overall vehicle performance.

My husband and I just moved from Nova Scotia and we were looking for a new garage. We saw great reviews, and when my car wouldn’t start, I called CAA and had them tow us to Bourk’s. Are we ever happy we did. The staff are extremely friendly, courteous, and quick turnaround. He took the time to explain to me exactly what they had to do. Quoted the price before hand, we picked up the vehicle today. Went over the work order took the time to answer all of my questions. This is definitely our new garage. They have not forgotten what Customer Service is all about and we appreciated everything. Keep up the great work guys

I wonder if Bob and Murtle Bourk had any idea when they launched Bourk's Ignition Ltd., back in 1937, that 89 years later today’s team would still be doing the Bourk name proud.
Currently operated by third-generation family members Gary and Bill Bourk, the auto care establishment has a glowing reputation, and in recent weeks I found out why.
It was time for my 14-year-old vehicle to have a thorough check up. A trusted mechanic who had been taking care of my year-to-year maintenance referred me to Bourk's Complete Car Care. And I’m extremely grateful that he did. The advice, service and follow up I received was second to none; courteous and efficient, friendly and professional, reasonably priced and meticulous.
I’ve always felt that a reliable vehicle is essential for peace of mind. With Bourk’s in my corner, I feel confident that my car care needs have been met for today and will always be taken care of in the future, by my news friends at Bourk’s.

Bryan and Stuart provided outstanding customer service when my car developed an issue during my commute on Carling Avenue yesterday. I stopped by without an appointment, and they had my car inspected within 15 minutes of my arrival to make sure it was still safe to drive home. Their willingness to help is greatly appreciated. Amazing service!

They were super clear, great to deal with, only did the work required and didn’t try any of that shady upsell business that’s all too common.
Offered a local uber, had strong wifi, and heck they even offered me a muffin.
Can’t recommend enough.
Great place for car service, great guys at the front desk! Fast, efficient service for a fair price and always get the car back same day!

Been going to Bourk's for years, and have always had a good experience. I trust them with the care of my vehicle, and they don't disappoint. On my most recent experience, they were able to quickly resolve an exhaust noise that clearly stumped the local Honda dealership.

I have taken my cars to Bourk's Complete Car Care in Kanata several times, and I’ve always had a great experience. I really appreciate being able to book appointments online and, after the work is completed, receiving a clear list of recommended services along with transparent pricing for each one.
Stuart and Jackson are consistently friendly and efficient during check-in, which makes the process smooth and stress-free. It’s also incredibly convenient that they offer a shuttle service if you don’t have transportation. Bruce is usually the driver, and I’m always happy to see him — he’s relaxed, personable, and a great driver.
All of the service work on my vehicles has been completed by Brennan Lorint, and I’ve never had any issues with the quality of his work. I have great confidence in the team and highly recommend Bourk’s Complete Car Care for all your automotive service needs.

I had an issue with my check engine light coming on and I was about to leave for vacation. Initially, I was going to leave my car for the week so they could check it over when they had time but they managed to squeeze me in and everything was resolved quickly before I had to leave. The guys in the shop and the gentleman driving the shuttle were all wonderful and I consider their rates to be reasonable. I will continue to be a customer as I have always had a good experience and know others who recommend this shop as well! Thank you Bourk's!
